Thomas Hardin Wins IANA’s 2007 Silver Kingpin Award
CALVERTON, MD) November 12—The Intermodal Association of North America (IANA) announced today that Thomas L. Hardin of the Hub Group is the 2007 winner of the Silver Kingpin Award, which recognizes individuals for significant, long-term contributions that advance the industry.
Hardin received the award during the opening ceremonies for the 2007 IANA Intermodal Expo, The National Industrial Transportation League’s TransComp and the Transportation Intermediaries Association’s fall meeting in Atlanta. Hardin played a key role in building the Hub Group, based in Downers Grove, Illinois, from a three-person agency into a publicly traded marketing and logistics company, with sales that topped $1.6 billion last year. He joined the company as general manager in 1972 and now is president – rail affairs.
“This year’s award is noteworthy because there never has been a repeat winner for career service at the same company,” said Frank J. Sonzala, chairman of IANA and executive vice president of Pressure Systems International Inc. “Nine years ago, the Hub Group’s founder, Phil Yeager, received his Silver Kingpin recognition. Over the years, Tom and Phil worked together to build Hub into the intermodal marketing juggernaut that it is today.”
Hardin, who joined Hub seven years after starting his transportation career at the Chicago & Eastern Illinois Railroad, facilitated strong growth in intermodal traffic by introducing the concept of volume rates. He also was one of the first executives to effectively coordinate the marketing and local trucking components of intermodal service.
In addition to his service at Hub, Hardin has served two terms as chairman of IANA’s Board of Directors, and he currently serves on the board of the Intermodal Transportation Institute at the University of Denver.
One of the transportation industry’s most well-established and prestigious awards, the Silver Kingpin has been given since 1977 to executives from intermodal marketing companies, suppliers, railroads, trucking companies and water carriers.
IANA is North America's leading industry trade association representing the combined interests of the intermodal freight industry. IANA's membership includes railroads, water carriers and stacktrain operators; port authorities; intermodal truckers and over-the-road highway carriers; intermodal marketing and logistics companies; and suppliers to the industry such as equipment manufacturers, intermodal leasing companies and consulting firms. IANA's associate members include shippers, academic institutions, government entities and non-profit associations.
