Intermodal Growth Continues Through Third Quarter 2005

Double-Digit International Pace Supports Flat Domestic Volume

CALVERTON, MD — Like the 13 quarters immediately preceding it, Q3 2005 posted another increase in intermodal volume—this time 5.6—now making intermodal’s growth streak 14 straight quarters, according to Intermodal Market Trends & Statistics, a quarterly publication of the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA). Overall intermodal growth increased during the quarter as ongoing double-digit international gains were supported by a modest domestic container turnaround.

Third Quarter 2004/2005 Intermodal Volume Comparisons

2004 Equipment Types Q3 2004 Q3 2005 Change
Trailers 655,162 641,206 -2.1%
Domestic Containers 800,247 810,112 +1.2%
All Domestic Equipment 1,455,409 1,451,318 -0.3%
ISO Containers 1,884,426 2,076,390 +10.2%
Total 3,339,835 3,527,708 +5.6%

IInternational volume grew in all nine IANA regions, topped with a substantial 32% gain in the Northwest region. Trailer volume declined for the third straight quarter, with volume off in seven of IANA’s nine regions, but the rate of decline has slowed. This, combined with renewed domestic container growth, resulted in a slight overall domestic decline. Hurricanes Katrina and Rita only modestly affected intermodal volumes during the quarter.

IANA is North America's leading industry trade association representing the combined interests of the intermodal freight industry. IANA's membership includes railroads, water carriers and stacktrain operators; port authorities; intermodal truckers and over-the-road highway carriers; intermodal marketing and logistics companies; and suppliers to the industry such as equipment manufacturers, intermodal leasing companies and consulting firms.
