Third Quarter Volume Sustains
Accelerated Growth Rate
Strong International Numbers Contributes
to
Tenth Consecutive Quarterly Gain
Greenbelt, MD, Nov. 10, 2004 – Intermodal Market Trends & Statistics, a quarterly publication of the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA), reports a significant 9.2% increase in intermodal volume for Third Quarter 2004 (Q3 2004). This increase is the tenth consecutive quarter of intermodal growth for Q3, and the strongest gain in volume since Q1 2003.
International containers showed their strongest gains in 18 months with an overall 13.3% increase over Q3 2003 results. Gains in import, export and domestic repositioning of units were evident in all regions. Seven of the nine regions tracked by Intermodal Market Trends & Statistics posted double-digit growth.
Trailer volumes were up through Q3 2004, boosted by the 11th uninterrupted quarter of double-digit gains in 53’ units. These primarily privately-owned units topped one-third of total trailer counts for the first time since IANA began collecting intermodal statistical data in 1996, when they were only 7% of this total. Also of note, 28’ trailer volume increased 7.8% compared to Q3 2003, showing railroads’ regaining traction with LTL and parcel carriers that traditionally use this equipment. Twenty-eight foot loads have now grown for the past four quarters after more than four years of consistent decline. While slowing from its first-half of the year pace, total trailer activity was still its second best in the last four quarters after more than four years of consistent decline. While slowing from its first-half of the year pace, total trailer activity was still its second best in the last four years, topped only by Q4 2003.
