BARRY D. MICHAELS NAMED
2004 IANA CHAIRMAN

UP Intermodal Operations Exec Assumes Top Leadership Role

Greenbelt, MD, January 19, 2004 – Barry D. Michaels has assumed the Chairmanship of the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA). Michaels, elected during IANA's recent Intermodal Expo, is Assistant Vice President - Strategic Premium Operations at the Union Pacific Railroad (UP), where he is responsible for service design and evaluation, strategic and capital planning, asset maintenance, and overall strategic operations for intermodal terminals and the intermodal network. Prior to this role at UP, Michaels held numerous positions in the operating department of the Chicago & Northwestern Railway, ranging from Assistant Manager, to Assistant Vice President of Intermodal Operations.

"I look forward to leading IANA in 2004 and addressing the common concerns of a diverse and growing membership," said Michaels. "During my career, I've had the opportunity to work in almost every part of intermodal operations - I plan to use this experience to aid IANA in advancing its mission on many fronts." One of Michaels' first challenges is forging an industry solution to the equipment roadability issue.

In addition to serving as IANA Chairman, Michaels chairs the Intermodal Working Committee of the Association of American Railroads and formerly chaired IANA's Operations Committee. "Barry is a strong leader who makes things happen and I'm pleased that he's agreed to take on this important role." said IANA President & CEO Joni Casey.
