SmartWay for Intermodal Truckers

EPA extends the SmartWay program to drayage carriers — How does it work? How can it work for you?

Motor carriers are finding that this program means big business!

Participating SmartWay shippers, which include some of the nation's biggest retailers, have committed to ship at least 75% of their port cargo with SmartWay drayage carriers within three years. This will give drayage firms a strong incentive to reduce their emissions. SmartWay carriers are also eligible to participate in programs that provide low-interest loans and down-payment assistance for transitioning to clean trucks.

The program just launched at the end of June and already shippers are giving business priority to SmartWay drayage carriers. In fact, a recent American Shipper survey ranked SmartWay first among all supply chain sustainability programs used by leading retailers and manufacturers.

Beginning in 2004, SmartWay is a voluntary effort designed to identify products and services that reduce transportation related emissions. SmartWay is considered one of the most effective Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) programs and has been a clear winner in terms of both financial benefits and air quality improvement. The program has provided more than $30 million in financing to help truck owners, especially small and medium sized operators, buy cleaner and more fuel-efficient trucks.
